JKR has the rights to her characters, and can make them think, feel and love as she so pleases. But why does her latest revelation that "Hermione and Ron was a mistake" and that "Hermione should have ended up with Harry" really, really get my blood boiling?
...Because to me, this is the equivalent of JKR saying that Lily should have ended up with Snape. It breaks the integrity of the woman (although Harry's not THAT bad of a choice compared with Snape) and reduces her to the status of "Hero's girlfriend". And what about Ginny? Who cares! She'll end up a lonely, miserable spinster (as any character who unrequitedly loves the protagonist does) - as the rest of the Weasley's mourn their losses (of Ron and Arthur and Fred - as they were all intended).
Why has JKR said this? Has she gone nuts? Has she forgotten the true significance of Hermione and Ron? Has she forgotten herself that she suggested (before the ending of the series) that Ron and Hermione were always intended to be (and indirectly telling H/HR shippers that they're lunatics)? WHAT IS GOING ON??
Hermione is unarguably THE MOST significant female character in literature because of these qualities:
- She isn't "popular"
- She chooses books over looks
- She has her flaws, but still has the important qualities of compassion and sacrifice
- SHE CHOOSES THE SIDEKICK, NOT THE LEADING MAN
... And therefore proves that kickass women do not need to be like Bella Swans (supposedly cool, popular, pretty, personality-less, end up with the hunk) in order to be powerful and significant.
Plus, hasn't Ron suffered enough? He never wins against Harry for anything! This is as bad as when the Prophet made up lies about Harry and Hermione in GOF and OotP, and when Horcrux!Harry and Horcrux!Hermione passionately kiss. Poor Ron. Gets nothing but the scraps and only lives in the end because JKR is terrified of the fans' response.
JKR. As contradictory as Lorde in her statements.
